Legionella bacteria is a waterborne pathogen often found in engineered water systems, for instance, in drinking water systems. An improperly maintained water system can lead to a build up of rust, biofilms and other foreign materials within the water, as well as stagnated water. This provides a perfect environment for Legionella bacteria to grow and multiply in water. When these contaminated water droplets are inhaled, Legionnaires’ Disease can be contracted. This is a potentially fatal form of pneumonia and results in approximately 250 deaths, per annum, in the UK.
