What is Legionella and why is it important to control?

Legionella bacteria is a waterborne pathogen that is commonly found in engineered water systems, such as drinking water systems. It is commonly found in hotels, hospitals, and offices. Inadequately maintained water systems are known to create the perfect environment for the legionella bacteria to grow and multiply. If water droplets containing legionella bacteria are inhaled, people can become infected with Legionnaires’ disease. In some sever cases Legionnaires’ disease can be fatal.

Under statutory HSE regulation Business owners, property owners and building managers have a responsibility to control the risk from legionella bacteria in their water systems.
