Fife Schools | Water Treatment and Commissioning

Services: Water Treatment and Commissioning

Client: Alternative Heat Ltd

Scope of Works: Closed System Water Treatment, Pre-Commission Cleaning, and System Balancing

Project Overview:

Cleartech Group was commissioned to support our client, Alternative Heat Ltd, in delivering sustainable heating upgrades across multiple schools throughout Fife in Scotland. The project involved the replacement of existing heating systems with new Air Source Heat Pumps, providing an energy-efficient and environmentally responsible solution for the local education estate.

Our teams were responsible for carrying out comprehensive water treatment and commissioning services to ensure the new installations operate efficiently, safely, and in full accordance with industry standards. With tight deadlines over the summer holiday break in Scotland, Cleartech’s expertise and planning were crucial in ensuring that all systems were ready for the return of pupils and staff.

Our engineers performed thorough pre-commission cleaning of the newly installed closed-loop systems to remove any potential contaminants that could impact performance. Specialist inhibitors were then introduced to protect the systems from corrosion and scale formation, safeguarding long-term efficiency and reliability.

Regular sampling and monitoring were conducted throughout the process to confirm water quality met BSRIA BG 29 and BG 50 guidelines. This ensured that all systems were fully compliant and ready for safe handover.

Working in close coordination with Alternative Heat’s mechanical teams, Cleartech delivered a structured pre-commission cleaning and balancing programme to optimise system performance. Our engineers carefully balanced flows and verified system pressures, ensuring the new heat pump installations operate at peak efficiency from day one.

Given the project’s scale and the limited timeframe available during the summer break, careful scheduling and teamwork were essential. Cleartech’s proactive communication and on-site adaptability ensured works were completed on schedule, with minimal disruption to the wider upgrade programme.

As part of the wider sustainability programme, Fife Council, in partnership with Alternative Heat and Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, celebrated the successful completion of the £1 million low-carbon upgrade at Beacon Leisure Centre with a Community Benefit Fun Day. The event, held at the start of Climate Week, showcased the new technologies — including air and water source heat pumps, solar PV, and energy efficiency upgrades — all designed to reduce the building’s carbon footprint and support Fife Council’s Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan.

The successful completion of this project demonstrates Cleartech’s capability to deliver high-quality commissioning and water treatment services on complex, multi-site projects, helping clients meet targets while maintaining compliance and operational excellence.
