The Legionnaires’ Premium Water Temperature Thermometer Kit contains everything required to monitor water supply temperatures for the prevention of Legionella growth. All employers who manage premises with hot/cold water systems and/or a wet cooling system have a legal responsibility to identify any risk of Legionella contamination and to prevent or control it.

The thermometer kit includes a robust and easy-to-use Therma 1 Industrial Thermometer that operates through the range of -99.9 to 1372 °C with a 0.1 °C or 1 °C resolution. With a 10000 hour battery life the 1.5 volt AAA batteries will last at least 5 years.

The Legionnaires’ Premium kit features three different probes for testing varying elements of the water system. The Penetration Temperature Probe can be used to record the temperature of tap water, the Ribbon Surface Temperature Probe for the surface of pipes and tanks and the Wire Probe for any areas that are difficult to reach.

The kit comes with a FREE traceable certificate of calibration, Water Resistant Countdown Timer, mini tub of Probe Wipes and ABS carrying case.

Incorrect water temperature is a key risk factor for Legionella growth. The Legionella bacteria multiply in water at temperatures between 20 to 45°C, particularly if a supply of nutrients is present, such as scale, rust, sludge or algae. A typical method of control is to store cold water below 20°C. Hot water should be stored above 60°C and distributed at above 50°C.

Current legislation means that if you are the employer or person in control of premises, you must organise a risk assessment. The revised Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) issued by the Government’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) significantly extends the scope of its guidance on control of legionella bacteria in water.

The code now applies to all hot and cold water systems in the workplace regardless of their capacity, i.e. the lower limit of 300 litres previously used to exclude domestic systems no longer applies. Whilst domestic systems may represent a risk, the code only applies to risk arising from a work activity.

This means that all employers who manage premises with hot/cold water systems and/or a wet cooling system have a legal responsibility to identify any risk of contamination and to prevent or control it.

LEGAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR TESTING FOR LEGIONELLA

If you are the employer or person in control of premises, you must organise a risk assessment from exposure to legionella. Whilst domestic systems may represent a risk, the code only applies to a risk arising from a work activity, but does include domestic landlords who have a duty to keep their tenants safe from health hazards. This means that all employers and landlords, who manage premises with hot/cold water systems and/or wet cooling systems, have a legal responsibility to identify any risk of contamination and to prevent or control it.
